Where in the World is Smokey?

Doing Mission Work in Jamaica

Emily Pollock, a senior in child and family studies, was part of a group of 130 students who traveled to Jamaica on a mission trip during spring break 2008. (She's wearing the dark hat in the photos.)

"Students from Calvary Baptist Church and the Baptist Collegiate Ministries went to Duncans, Jamaica, in the parish of Trelawney. The group was split into different groups who did various things across the island. Teams included a medical and eye team, a group who worked in an orphanage, several students worked in schools in the Duncans area, a group who traveled to several schools and presented a program about STDs and the importance of safe sex or complete abstinence and a construction crew who did various projects around the camp where we stayed.

"I had the privilege of working with the orphanage team. Many of the girls that were in this facility were there for disciplinary reasons and were waiting for their court dates. We tutored the girls in reading and math, played games with them, and taught them songs, including "Rocky Top," which we capped of the week by giving each girl an orange and white shaker and singing with them. Not only did we share our Tennessee pride with the girls, we shared the love of Christ with them as well. It was such a rewarding Spring Break and I am glad I used it to serve other people."
