Where in the World is Smokey?

On Safari in South Africa

UTK alumni Joe, Linda and Will Conner went to South Africa in March 2008.

"The first three days were spent in Cape Town, where we sailed in Table Bay, visited Bergkelder Wine Centre in Stellenbosch for a wine tasting and traveled to the Cape of Good Hope seeing baboons, ostrich and penguins along the way. Joe and Will also got a private tour of Green Point Stadium -- the site of the 2010 World Cup.

"On Wednesday, we traveled to Jackalberry Lodge adjacent to the Greater Kruger National Park. There, we went on three morning safaris at 5 a.m. and three evening safaris around 4 p.m. We were able to see and photograph all of the Big Five -- buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and rhino plus many more animals like cheetah, hippo, giraffe and wildebeest.

"We also took a side trip to Blyde River Canyon, the third deepest canyon in the world. It was a vacation we will never forget."

Joe Conner ('68,'73) is vice president of Glynwed USA Inc. in Johnson City, Tenn. He maintains the books for the holding company and prepares the taxes for all the U.S. companies of a major foreign corporation. Linda Conner ('69) works with Joe and is also treasurer of Neil Holdings Inc. Will Conner ('06) lives in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he is an accounting and reporting specialist handling pension funds at the Bank of New York-Mellon.

In this photo, Joe, Will and Linda are just finishing a safari. Their tracker, Adam, is in the Land Rover.
