Alumni Debora Clifford and Brian Clifford of Plainfield, N.J., both earned their doctorates in education at UT Knoxville in 1976. They are now retired. Deb spent much of career as a middle school language arts teacher, and Brian worked as a counselor in a high school. Both were adjunct psychology professors at Kean University in Union, N.J.
Both also were very active in extracurricular activities -- Deb in dramatics and Brian in outdoor education. Brian helped develop "adventure" activities to be used as a counseling tool at his school, and also local fifth graders to their multi-day conservation camp program for more than 25 years. They continue to stay busy.
"We both are volunteering with the literacy program at our local library, tutoring students weak in reading/writing skills, and those needing English as a second language assistance," the couple wrote. But they find time to play, too -- as evidenced by this photo from a recent cruise through the Panama Canal.
"We are onboard the Island Princess in the Gatun (Atlantic side) locks of the Panama Canal on Feb. 1, 2008," they wrote.
