Where in the World is Smokey?

Learning About Kansas History

Erin Cope graduated from UT Knoxville in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

Cope lives in Independence, Mo., and works in Lenexa, Kan., as a Development Review Engineer, doing new development plan review.

She sent these photos from Lenexa. The first one is at city hall; the second at the “Mother Lenexa” statue.

The statue, which sits on city hall grounds, is of NaNexSe (Lenexa), wife of Shawnee Chief Thomas Blackhoof. The chief and his wife had been educated in Ohio before they traveled to the Shawnee lands in present-day Johnson County, Kansas. The statue is dedicated both to NaNexSe and to Joan Bowman, mayor of the city during time of unprecedented growth and prosperity.
