Playing Sports 4 Peace in Iraq

Sarah Hillyer is a doctoral student in sport sociology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She and fellow doctoral student Ashleigh Huffman are the creators of Sport 4 Peace, an organization that provides camps and programs that use sport as a tool to make peace and to empower girls and women in cultures where there may be obstacles for them. Together, Hillyer and Huffman have worked in the Middle East, Asia and North Africa. Government officials, National Olympic Committees and other groups have invited Sport 4 Peace to their countries.

"I was in Iraq during July 2008 teaching basketball to girls who aspire to represent Iraq as the first generation of Olympians since the fall of Saddam," Hillyer wrote. "There were 60 women ages 16-30 who came to the training camp."

Hillyer sent three photos from her trip to Iraq:

"The one that overlooks a dusty mountain range was taken in one of the mountain ranges where the U.S. Defeated Al-Qaeda in 2003 and gave the mountain villages back to the Kurdish people," she wrote.

"The one where I am standing on some old ruins is in Amman, Jordan overlooking the city. The ruins are from one of the temples for Hercules."

"The last picture is of some of our basketball campers who received Lady Vol basketballs, thanks to Coach Summitt and her staff!"
