Where in the World is Smokey?

Conducting a Public Health Exercise in Alaska

Casey Thomas, of Kingston, is a 2005 graduate with a bachelor's degree in communications.

"I work for Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in the health communication and research program. I work mostly with public health preparedness, such as conducting exercises for the Centers for Disease Control about responding to public health threats, like infectious diseases or even natural disasters. The trip to Alaska was for work. We held an exercise with representatives from the port of Anchorage, simulating a response to the first case of an infectious disease coming into the country through the port."

"I travel a lot, both for work and on my own. I took 17 business trips in 2007, all in the US. Some of the places I went were Alaska, Hawaii, Vermont, Kansas City, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., San Diego and Miami.

"This photo was taken in front of Exit Glacier in Alaska. You can almost see the glacier in the background. We hiked up to the Glacier, but it rained the whole time! This picture was taken on the way back down, when it finally stopped raining. It was blowing wind and was about 35 degrees!"
