Where in the World is Smokey?

Flying Through Metropolis

Amy Blakely is assistant director of media relations at UT and oversees "Where in the World is Smokey?"

"In October 2007, my children and I took a trip to my hometown, Centralia, Ill., to see my mom and enjoy the Halloween festivities there. Along the way, we stopped in Metropolis, Ill., home of Superman. This little town has a giant Superman statue and a Superman museum.

"In Centralia, we took part in the annual Kiddie Halloween Parade -- something I always loved when I was little. It was really fun to walk in the parade with my 'Dynamic Duo.' Svetlana, 6, was Batgirl, and Lucas, 4, was Batman. That night, we went to the big Halloween parade. It had about 150 entries -- big floats, bands and lots of costumed walkers throwing candy. It was great fun! Centralia has only about 16,000 residents, but always pulls out the stops for its Halloween celebrations."
