Where in the World is Smokey?

Exploring Sapelo Island

Bill Dockery, a coordinator in UT's Office of Research, took these photos of his daughter, Haley, and her brother, Marshall, on their October 2007 jaunt to St. Simons Island and Sapelo Island.

"Sapelo Island is a limited-access barrier island off the Georgia coast owned by the state and managed as a nature preserve. A small community of Gullah/GheeChee African Americans are the only private residents of the island," he wrote.

The first photo is of Haley and Marshall on the ferry from Meridian, Ga., to Sapelo Island. The second photo is of Haley at the recently restored Sapelo Island lighthouse.
